As a kid growing up in South Africa, my uncle would occasionally bring me the most amazing toys from America or England. Within a day the toys would be fully disassembled. I still love to take things apart but now that I\u2019m older, I am better at re-assembly.<\/p>\n
I love to learn and to understand. I love to delve into how things work. Whether I’m writing software, keeping bees or building a table, the creative process is the same; first I deconstruct, absorb and obsess and then I rebuild my own version using the understanding gained.<\/p>\n
I began this project as the date for my American Citizenship approached. I was intrigued by the evocative power of American iconography, symbols and brands. How had these symbols and icons come to mean so much to me? How is it that simply the outline of the country\u2019s borders can be so evocative? What happens when you take disparate symbols of America and combine them? In this project I have disassembled and reassembled some of these elements in seeking to understand the beauty and strength of \u201cAmerican.\u201d<\/p>\n
Most of my art relates to process and journey more than the end product. Becoming an American is exceptional in that the destination is as profound and life changing as the journey.<\/p>\n
